Obituary

Rovetta Doucet Latham was born in Detroit, MI on August 20, 1934 to parents, Hattie Mae Wilson and George Pierre Doucet. She was very fortunate to grow up in a large and loving extended family that included her beloved stepfather, Roger William Morris. Many people knew her as his daughter, Rovetta Morris.

After living briefly in Louisville, KY and Chicago, IL, Rovetta, Hattie and Roger moved to Detroit, MI where she attended Detroit Public Schools. She met her husband-to-be, Ronald William Latham, in the principal's office at Columbian Primary School. They were both new students starting the 1st grade together. They were six-years old. Rovetta took dance lessons, ballet, tap, Latin and jazz. She also studied art. She maintained a lasting appreciation for the arts and music. Rovetta made friends who enriched her life everywhere she lived.

Rovetta graduated from Central High School in January 1952. She completed two years of study at Wayne State University before starting work at Michigan Bell Telephone Company (later Ameritech Publishing Company) in 1954. Rovetta and Ronald Latham were married on February 19, 1955 by a close family friend, Reverend Albert Cleage (aka Jaramogi Abebe Agyeman), witnessed by Lonnie Murray and Dr. Louis J. Cleage. Lonnie Murray, a friend since childhood, and his wife Barbara, have been lifelong friends of hers. Members of the extended Cleage family have played important roles in her life as mentors, supporters, friends and distant cousins.

Rovetta was lucky to have both a long, successful career at Bell Telephone Co. and a long, happy marriage. During her 32 years at Bell Telephone Co., Rovetta worked her way up from Switchboard Operator to Publishing Staff Manager. She designed, implemented and sold a software package for a mechanized billing system and was the National Representative at Bell for NYPSA coordination. She led a team that supported the Michigan mechanized Yellow Pages Systems designs, testing, training and field reviews. Rovetta particularly enjoyed her role as Staff Manager Management Training in which she designed and taught 23 courses for newly promoted management personnel. She loved meeting new people and the travel that her job required. Rovetta and Ronald were married for over 50 years. They were blessed with the birth of their son, Ronnie in 1962 and pleasantly surprised by the births of their identical twin daughters, Alex and Beth in 1978.

Rovetta retired from Bell Telephone Co. on August 31, 1987. Not content with retirement at an early age, she went back to work in 1988 at Simon, Michelson and Zieve (SMZ) Advertising as a Yellow Pages Publishing Manager. She enjoyed a second, 23-year career working in a different industry with a young, dynamic staff. She retired from SMZ Advertising in July 2011.

Rovetta was devoted to her husband and children. She loved cooking elaborate meals for her family. She and Ron enjoyed hosting friends and family particularly during the Christmas holiday season. She was an avid and voracious reader. She loved gardening--the rose bushes that she planted at her first home with her husband, still bloom today. She lost the love of her life, her husband, Ron, on September 12, 2005. Although diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor at the end August 2015, Rovetta maintained a positive attitude and had a fighting spirit. She passed away unexpectedly on October 1, 2015.

Her parents preceded her in death: George Doucet in 1975, Roger Morris in 1994 and Hattie Mae Morris in 1997. A brother, George Pierre Doucet, Jr., preceded her in death in 1980.

Rovetta Latham leaves to cherish her memory: her three children, Ronald Louis Latham of Troy, MI, Rovetta Elizabeth Latham of Ardmore, PA and Alexandra Elaine Latham of Alexandria VA; her sisters, Moria Elaine Waddy (Arthur) of Chicago, IL, Valkyrie Doucet of Detroit, MI, Emma Sheperd of Detroit, MI; cousin, James Bradix Bryant (Carmelita) of Louisville, KY and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
