Obituary for Gladys Hill

Gladys Hill
Gladys Hill was born to the union of Frank and Anna McNeil on August 19, 1923. She was the oldest and last of the two daughters born to this union, with her sister, Dorothy preceding her in death. Her mother died at the age of 53 in 1964 which was a great lost for her but her father was with her until his death at the age of 82.

Gladys grew up in Detroit. Her mother was a devoted Catholic and she graduated from the Sacred Heart High School on the eastside of Detroit. This strict and thorough education would greatly benefit her throughout her life. People were always impressed with both her speech and grammar.

Gladys married Herbert Hill and gave birth to a daughter, Lynnette, and a son, Leslie from this union. She became a widow in 1975 when Herbert died and she never remarried.

Education was important to Gladys. Although she never received a college degree, she attended classes at the Wayne State University Lifelong Learning, as well as, other educational endeavors. She was always learning new things, a gift she passed on to her daughter who shared many of those activities growing up. She made sure that both her son and daughter went to college.

Gladys enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, music, and traveling, especially cruises. She made it a point to take both her father and sister on a cruise to Hawaii before his death so that he could enjoy this adventure.

She held several jobs before becoming a City of Detroit employee from where she retired as a Human Resources Manager in January, 1991. Although she looked forward to her retirement she was unable to fully enjoy it as she would have wanted due to health but still enjoyed life with family and friends.

Gladys departed this world on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 surrounded by her family at the age of 91. She leaves behind her loving daughter and son, Lynnette and Leslie, a grandson, Leslie Jr., nieces, extended family and friends.
