Life Lessons

Mr. Shakespear,

Thank you for the impact you had on my life and for serving as someone to model after. I remember when Fatman and I were driving to work and blew a tire. You came, switched cars so that we could get to work, and took over the flat situation. At the time, I thought we’d just gotten a pass as we were both more than capable at that stage of the game to handle the flat. I later realized that the lesson was you stressing the importance of being on time to work.

This was a temporary gig for us and at my age, I would have been prone to blow it off were it not for my Dad and the jewels bestowed on me by life leaders like yourself. Fatman and I had no way of knowing that this little temporary job for this little Detroit lawyer, working on Mayor Coleman Young’s re-election campaign would lead or amount to anything. I suspect you didn’t either yet you taught the lesson and instilled the values of work ethic, all part of your daily routine. That little lawyer from Detroit went on to be a great judge and made it on to the big screen and is now known by many well outside of that little office we worked in Detroit. If I were to run into him today, his memory of me would come from that little blow off job. He’d remember Fatman and I’s work ethic, the quality of our work, our promptness and how we carried ourselves. They say you live and learn and back then I could not have imagined. Now, I’ve lived a little bit, I’ve learned a little bit, and I will always be thankful for that little lesson you gave.

Thank you,

Man (Dave Townsend II)
